When face to face meetings don't work out
So youve exchanged several emails and pictures and everything
looks good. Youve talked on the phone and everything sounds
good. You agree youd like to meet in a neutral public place
for a drink and chat. How do you say no thanks when your
face to face meeting doesnt work out?
Perhaps you show up and barely recognize the person (people)
sitting across from you because their pictures were old.
Maybe after talking you realize they werent completely
honest in what they previously wrote or said. It could be
you just dont click. Ive had all of these happen to me more
than once. Heres what I do to make it as painless and safe
as possible to meet and say no thanks if it doesnt work out
(1) Make sure everyone understands that you will have a
short, noncommittal meeting with no expectations of anything
more happening that night. (2) Make sure it is in a very public
place. (3) Agree to meet, have one drink or cup of coffee,
and then go home and contact each other via email. (4) Agree
that a simple no thanks (with no further contact) will be
answer enough. If you have no intention of meeting them
you only need to write two words in your email to them, No
Thanks. If they insist on writing back and asking why (Ive
had this happen) dont answer. If you had an agreement,
stick to it.
