Down by the Shore
My first dae with Jody was purly by accident, or so I thought.
I was in the military, and had a date for payday night with
a hot redhead that worked for the summer in a beach resort
down the road from the Base I was stationed at. she had the
reputation of being a great lay, and I even heard others
from camp refer to her as "mattress back Mary".
She lived in a house with a young widow, her two sisters,
and her two kids. It was payday, and I called to confirm the
time to pick her up, and her landlady Jody answered, and
explained to me that Mary hadn't been home in a couple
of days, and she was shacked up with two black entertainers
from a local club, and I really shouldn't be going out
with "that kinda girl", my response if she wanted
to save me from hell she would have to go out with me then.
She agreed, and I said I would pick her up at 6PM and we would
go to Dinner first. I arrive a little early, and sat and played
with her little 4 year old boy while Jody finished getting
ready. When we left the house and got in the car, her first
words were " I know today is payday, and I am just going
out with you for all I can get, and thats all". My reply
was a simple "Well Baby, I am just going out withyou
for all I can get, and that's all. We had a nice dinner,
and hit a couple of the Clubs for thier shows, and she seemed
to know everybody in town, it turned out that she had been
a singer with a well know "Big Band" ha played
every summer in this resort, but had broken away, and was
now playing the Piano Bar in one of the most exclusive Clubs
in Town. About 2AM we went down to the beach and laid in the
sand, listing to music on the radio, while I tried to make
out, remember the comments I made about the "she said,
I said at the begining of our date, well I spent my full paycheck,
so she got it all, and I got nothing. But it gets better, at
7 AM we went back to the base, I saw a buddy from HQ and talked
him into making me a set of Orders shipping me overseas,
and a 72 hour pass, (in those days almost all states had a
3 day "waiting time" between the time you took
out a marraige licence) and we went to the next State over
that, would waive the "waiting time for servicemen,
if you were leaving for overseas assignment within 48 hours.
At 12 O'Clock Noon, we appeared befor the Judge and
got married, that will be 54 years ago this August 2nd, and
we are still married. We have always claimed we got married
for each others money, and we both got cheated. This is a
True Story.
